The main opposition party to the UK conservatives, the UK Labour Party will be trying it’s hardest this election to topple the Tories and gain a majority. If this ends up being the outcome, what will the UK have to expect for the months to come?
Unlike the Tory majority outcome, it doesn’t quite matter whether the Labour party garners a rather small or large majority. Either way, the outcome does not change too much in the grand scheme of things. The most immediate and obvious change to the UK’s future would be the fate of Brexit.
Brexit, under a Labour majority would no longer be facing down the barrel of the pseudo-hard or hard Brexit that Boris Johnson has been pushing for. The first few days of a Labour majority would likely detail the future of Brexit for the country. Should Jeremy Corbyn go the EU for another extension, it is almost a sure-fire implication that a second referendum would be underway, one in which the Labour party would hope that the large majority of voters vote for staying within the EU. This outcome would likely be the most palatable for the Labour party, as it would bring an end to the years of political uncertainty and allow the party to refocus on internal affairs, which have often taken a backseat within the last 3 years to Brexit squabbling.
However, should Jeremy Corbyn not seek another extension to the Brexit deadline, it means his party and himself have forged the nation’s future to certainly leave the EU. However, the Brexit that the Labour party would bring about would likely be far softer than the current deal, owing to a more economical Brexit focus that the Labour party has. This would likely pass a Labour Majority parliament quite quickly and also pass the EU leaders quickly as well, allowing for Brexit to be over and done with.
As such, should the Labour party gain a majority, the UK’s future would likely see a soft Brexit or no Brexit occur. While this may allow parliament to refocus on internal affairs, the possible societal ramifications and protests may induce just as much chaos as is currently seen within the UK’s political atmosphere.
