While not the most likely outcome tonight, it is the one that many around the world believe will occur coming out of the UK general election. So, should the UK parliament become a hung parliament, what would that mean for the UK as a whole, and would the future itself be hung in the balance?
A hung parliament would be disadvantageous to both sides of UK politics, as it would show that the UK public have little faith in neither major party. Additionally, it would stifle any progress on the Brexit front, and likely mean an extension would have to be made rather quickly as the UK sorted out its own internal affairs. This would further present a weakened UK to the EU and the world as a whole, one fully divided on the issue and without any unity on how to progress forward as a country. It would show the world that the UK’s leadership on both sides were not trusted by their own public, and the chaos that would descent within the UK parliament would be far worse than anything happening right now.
Beyond the chaotic implications of a hung parliament, it would also likely mean that Labour may get it’s way with Brexit. Jeremy Corbyn’s party has at the very least had the Lib Dems and SNP on their side to block much of the Tories attempts to complete Brexit, and if the Labour party should either propose a second referendum or a new deal within the hung parliament, it is likely those two parties would again support the Labour party. However, it would not be a show of constant supply, as both parties have stated they do not support Jeremy Corbyn, meaning a hung parliament is likely to stay for the future.
Overall, should a hung parliament happen, it is likely that the major parties would take major hits and have large internal strife, while externally, the UK would gradually slide closer to a more Labour aligned version of Brexit.
