With the leader of the House of Commons, Andrea Leadsom resigning from her position due to her grievances with British Prime Minister’s Theresa May’s Brexit Withdrawal plan, the fate of Brexit becomes even more uncertain. The torrent affair which has seen the British Parliament become a farce as parties are unable to agree on a plan may well take Theresa May next, and after that, may end the dream of Brexit.
Theresa May has been quoted many times stating that she is dedicated towards seeing Brexit become a reality, though with news of her possible resignation it seems likely that this dedication has wavered. For all her faults, even the ones that have lead to this decision, she has remained stubborn to do anything other than ensure a form of Brexit occurs. With her gone and a possible general election on the horizon, there is a chance that Brexit dies with her.
No matter who wins or loses if May resigns, Brexit stands to suffer. Even members of the Tory party have begun to accept the eventuality of a second referendum and it seems like a majority of people on the British isles are now over the Brexit chaos. Should a second referendum occur, it’s not impossible to see how Brexit could be killed in its tracks. Many are done with the chaotic nature of British Parliament due to it and seemingly would prefer to just stay if it would allow Britain to actually focus on Britain again.
At the same time, should Brexit even survive, the removal of Theresa May and the calling of a General election would require another extension at this point. This is a worrying trend for Brexit, where it keeps getting delayed over and over again, to the point where the delays may be more frequent on votes deciding the countries fate. The more delays Brexit goes through, the less people believe in it and the less stable the nation’s democracy becomes.
As it stands, should Theresa May fall, so too could Brexit. Endless delays and the threat of the public voting against it in a second referendum means that the failure of Brexit at this point is seemingly more likely than the success of it. For many on the isles, whether they be politicians, business owners or just an average citizen, the finalization of Brexit or the cessation of it creates no difference in their minds. Most just want the chaos to end.
